Senior Payroll Accountant

Main Mission

The Senior Payroll Accountant is responsible for managing and recording all payroll‑related accounting activities.

While payroll processing is carried out by the HR department, this role ensures the accuracy of payroll entries, compliance with tax and social regulations, and proper reconciliation with the general ledger.

The Senior Payroll Accountant acts as a key link between HR (Payroll) and Accounting and reports directly to the Group Chief Accountant.

Key Responsibilities

1. Payroll Accounting & Control

  • Record and reconcile payroll entries in the accounting system.

  • Verify the accuracy and consistency of payroll data and general ledger postings.

  • Reconcile payroll-related accounts (salaries, taxes, social contributions).

  • Monitor paid leave, bonuses, and employee benefit accruals.

  • Record social-related invoices, bank transactions, and perform bank reconciliations.

  • Calculate monthly/quarterly accruals (holiday, retirement benefits, related charges).

  • Prepare direct/indirect payroll cost allocation tables for management reporting.

  • Prepare payment files (wages, social contributions) for CPO review.

  • Investigate and explain payroll-related variances.

2. Social & Tax Declarations

  • Verify social declarations (social security, pension funds, health insurance, etc.).

  • Assist and verify annual filings (employee income reports, training tax, apprenticeship tax, etc.).

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable social, tax, and labour regulations.

3. Financial Closing & Reporting

  • Participate in monthly and annual closings (deadline compliance, accruals, invoices, commissions).

  • Reconcile and justify payroll and social charge accounts.

  • Produce and analyze payroll reports (staff costs, headcount, benefits).

  • Support internal and external audits by providing payroll documentation.

4. Process Improvement & Support

  • Collaborate with HR and Accounting to optimize payroll-related accounting processes.

  • Support system upgrades and the implementation of new tools.

  • Stay up to date on changes in payroll legislation and accounting standards.

Profile Required

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting (BBA, Accounting Diploma, or equivalent).

  • Professional certification (ACCA, CPA…) is a plus.

Experience

  • 3–5+ years of experience in payroll accounting.

  • Experience with multi‑country payroll and compliance is preferred.

  • Previous involvement in internal/external audits and preparation of payroll‑related financial statements.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and payroll processes.

  • Knowledge of social, tax, and labour regulations.

  • Proficiency in ERP tools (Sage X3 strongly preferred).

  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis).

  • Fluent in English; French is an asset.

  • Salary: 45k€ to 55k€ gross per year (depending on experience) + discretionary bonus
